We publish a note from Rev. Mr. Moffat in regard to the subject matter of Bishop Kain's sermon on Sunday and our comments thereon. Mr. Moffat takes issue with the Bishop's statement as to the views held by the reformers of the 16th century on the subject of infant damnation, and also with our quotation of a certain well known, if not well authenticated, expression, on the same subject. We have not authorities at hand to consult as to the authenticity of the exact expression quoted by us, but Mr. Moffat is, of course, as well aware as we are that it is a quotation that has been current for many years in the discussions on this subject. The precise expression, however, is immaterial, in as much as it is the doctrine of infant damnation and not any particular manner of stating it that is the essential point in the case.
This doctrine is not new by any means. The generally accepted fact that it has been held and taught publicly and privately is not very likely to be an error. We have the personal assurance of a respected clergyman, well known to Mr. Moffat, that he has heard the doctrine preached from the pulpit. We presume that other people have heard the same thing. Certain it is that nearly every body has heard of it being taught, and the belief is common among intelligent people that a generation or two ago it was no novelty to hear it.

Main Argument
the doctrine of infant damnation was historically taught by 16th-century reformers and in pulpits, regardless of the exact quotation's authenticity; the core issue is the doctrine itself, not its phrasing.
