On the 27th Inst. every one was in Expectation of seeing the Execution of the Criminals, who were condemned to be broken alive on the Wheel. Every Preparation was made, and the Prisoners were brought to the Place of Execution. When the Sentence was read, one of the Delinquents was placed in a Posture to receive the Blows. and the Executioner had even raised the Bar for that purpose, when a Pardon from the Empress was proclaimed. We hear that her Majesty has granted these Malefactors their Lives; but they are to undergo the Punishment of the Knout, to have the Tip of their Noses cut off, to be branded in the Face with a hot Iron, and afterwards to be sent to the Gallies for the rest of their Days.
