At any other time than the present he would have been treated with less severity, but it has been thought proper to make him a severe example, and exert the utmost rigour of the law, when impiety dares to attack the rights of the Holy See.
People are waiting in anxious expectation for the Auto da fe [bon-fire] which the Holy Father is preparing, in order to execute the sentence of the thrice holy inquisition. It would seem odd that there should be such a thing as a secular arm, or temporal power, at Rome, where the government is wholly ecclesiastic, did we not consider that thereby is meant the Lay-Magistrates, the Sbirri and Jack Ketches, to whom the Church, like a tender mother, delivers over all those of her refractory children that she has not cruelty enough to murder with her own hands.
