AND ELSEWHERE
There has been a partial revival of the
gossip concerning the constitutional con-
vention question as an issue in the ap-
proaching democratic campaign in this
state. The matter has not been discussed
for several months, and it appeared to be
practically forgotten during that time.
Just what brings it into current political
gossip now is not clear, unless the party
leaders have adverted to it in possible dis-
cussions of probable issues and candidates
for 1900. Nor is there any basis for a guess
as to how the matter will be dealt with.
There will have to be a general interchange
of opinions on the subject, it seems, before
any definite conclusion is arrived at. So
say the gossipers. Another matter is re-
ceiving the thoughtful consideration of men
whom the party trusts for leadership and
guidance. That is, broadly speaking,
whether the campaign shall be prosecuted
on state or national issues, or both. It
is not improbable that things in that di-
rection will begin shortly to shape them-
themselves, and in good time the point will be
clearly and definitely determined. Chair-
man Robert J. Lowe of the state demo-
cratic executive committee was asked if he
had considered any particular time for the
calling of the committee together. He re-
plied that he had not. He had, as a matter
of course, given careful consideration to
the necessity of a committee meeting; but
no particular date had suggested itself to
his mind, nor had any been suggested to
him by members of the committee. Fur-
ther than that he had nothing to say upon
the subject. It is known that some of the
leading men of the party have met each
other within the past two weeks, and
doubtless they informally discussed the
situation; but there appears to have been
no attempt at concert of action in any
direction.

Partial revival of gossip concerning the constitutional convention question as an issue in the approaching democratic campaign in this state. Matter not discussed for several months but now in current political gossip, possibly due to party leaders discussing probable issues and candidates for 1900. No basis for guess on how it will be dealt with; general interchange of opinions needed. Another matter: whether campaign shall be on state or national issues, or both. Things may shape themselves shortly. Chairman Robert J. Lowe has not considered particular time for calling committee together, though given careful consideration to necessity of meeting. Some leading men met past two weeks and informally discussed situation, but no concert of action.
