Full Text

Tallien has, it is said, for these two last years been occupied in writing "the secret, military, political, moral, and religious memoirs of Napoleon Bonaparte, styling himself the government of France for life." These curious memoirs were finished and intended as a Christmas box to the French republic.

Informed by his spies of this dangerous production, Bonaparte ordered the prefect of police to make a domiciliary visit to Tallien's apartments, where no capture was made, but a voluntary declaration obtained from Tallien, that four copies were already deposited; two by a known royalist, and destined to appear in Russia and England, and two by a furious jacobin to be published somewhere else upon the continent. This domiciliary visit took place on the sixth of December last at 4 o'clock in the morning. At 8, Tallien received from Bonaparte a commission, constituting him one of the inspectors over the French press a place worth 40,000 livres in the year, an invitation to dine at the Tuileries, and a draft on the minister of the treasury, Marbois, for 150,000 francs, pour arranger ses affaires.
