ABSTRACT OF INTELLIGENCE FROM VERA CRUZ, TO THE 12TH OF OCTOBER,

Respecting the late Revolution in Mexico, and the arrest of the Viceroy Iturrigaray who had formed a plan to proclaim himself King of New Spain.

The day fixed for the completion of this plan was the 20th of September, being the festival of our Lady of Guadalupe, which is celebrated in the Church, outside the city of Mexico, and which is attended by almost the whole of the inhabitants. The project of the traitor Iturrigaray, was to set fire to the church during the celebration, and in the alarm, to introduce his soldiers, who were encamped beyond the walls, into the city—on gaining which, they were to arrest and murder the wealthy inhabitants, who were not attached to the Viceroy, who was, at the same time to be proclaimed King.

This diabolical plan was found among his papers, by which it was also discovered, that his principal agent was a Clergyman or Canon of the Church of Guadalupe.

The treason was anticipated—and on the night of the 15th of September, 800 of the Mexican Youth, many of them of the first families, surprised the Viceroy and his family in his palace, and compelled him to abdicate his authority. A meeting of the principal Tribunals was then held, at which it was agreed to secure the person of Iturrigaray, and to elect in his stead, the Brigadier Don Pedro Garibay, a man universally beloved. It was also agreed to acknowledge the authority of the Supreme Junta of Seville, or any other that represented the Government of Ferdinand 7th—and it was resolved to transmit to Spain, without loss of time, all the money belonging to the Government, to be placed at the disposal of the Junta of Seville—that Iturrigaray should be sent a prisoner to Spain—that his property, which according to report, amounted to Four Millions of Dollars should be confiscated.

On the 15th of October, he and all his family were prisoners in the Castle of St. John d'Ulua, at Vera Cruz, whence they were to embark on board the ship of war St. Augustina, appointed to carry the Treasure and State Prisoners to Spain.

All Mexico was tranquil and contented with the change, which had been effected without bloodshed, except in the case of one of the Viceroy's guards, who having fired on the party that went to arrest him, was killed by a pistol shot.
