Ministers and Laymen alike in the 8th Episcopal District are thrilled at the prospect of the new Theological Education program developed at the recent meeting of the Trustee Board at Campbell College Commencement - partly because of the extremely limited opportunities which have been available in general Education here and because of the predominantly rural nature of our area most of the pastors of our churches have not had full opportunity for formal school training for the ministry.
Under the Deanship of the intrepid Veteran of many battles, the inimitable old Ronan, Dr. John J. Morant, the Edward W. Lampton Theological Seminary has sought to meet this situation with its offering of the traditional classical Theological Seminary Course, and some fine products have been developed.
During the past year, however, our Seminary dropped to its lowest ebb. The President's report shows that not a single pupil was regularly enrolled in the Seminary. Our committee faced this situation squarely. As a result of our deliberation and recommendation, the Board voted for a thorough reorganization and new orientation of the Seminary.
During the coming year a committee is to study and re-write the entire curriculum of the school, placing its emphasis on the practical task of the preacher-rather than the classical lore.
A program of recruitment for candidates of the ministry will open in every church with emphasis upon graduates of the senior high school. A search for fresh instructional talent for the faculty is under way.
We have found our Bishop, Rt. Rev. Frederick D. Jordan entirely in accord with this undertaking. His experience as the organizer of the school of Religion at Western University is a great help to us at this time.
