General Lawton was shot and instantly killed by a Filipino sharp-shooter while standing in front of his tent last Tuesday. He made a record during the Civil War and in fighting Indians in the west after the close of the war of which any man might be proud. and when the Spanish war broke out he immediately entered the field and by his heroic conduct did much to make the invasion of Cuba a success. Later he was sent to the Philippines and has taken a very prominent part in the campaign which resulted in the breaking up of the Philippine army.
