Full Text

Part of a sad affair which involved a woman and a murder, was enacted in Pendleton, Wednesday night, says the Tribune. About 12 o'clock a woman appeared at the ladies' entrance of the Golden Rule Hotel on horse back. The night clerk, who assisted her to alight, assigned her apartments and took her horse to the feed stable, not suspecting the nature of the woman's mission or the sorrow that was overwhelming her heart.

She was Mrs. I. C. Otto and she had ridden two miles from Long Creek without rest Her husband, Ed Otto, had been killed at Pollock in the Camas Prairie country of Northern Idaho, and she was hastening in response to a telegram to the scene of the tragedy She had been living with her parents for some time on account of trouble with her husband but he had visited her there and a reconciliation had been effected A few days previously he passed through Pendleton on his way back to their home where he was engaged in the saloon business, owning five different saloon properties in North Idaho Soon after his return he became engaged in a quarrel with William Duncan, accusing him of causing trouble with his wife. A special to the Livingston Tribune of May 22 from Grangeville, Idaho, says:

William Duncan, the saloon keeper who shot and killed Ed Otto in the Forester's saloon at Pollock last Friday night, reached Mount Idaho this evening in the custody of Sheriff Dixon, and is now confined in jail there waiting preliminary examination Late reports received relative to the killing are to the effect that Otto returned a few days ago from Oregon and the trouble heretofore existing between him and his wife had been adjusted ind that there had been a complete reconciliation Duncan, it seems, was in some way identified with the family troubles of Otto and it was in connection with this matter that Otto visited Duncan's saloon the night of the killing It is said that soon after entering the saloon Otto assaulted Duncan when he secured a weapon from behind the bar and shot Otto. Death resulted almost immediately.
