WASHINGTON, (AP) - President Eisenhower said today he personally favors building a new Central American canal but opposes internationalization of the Panama Canal.
He added, however, that construction of a new canal would involve a lot of technical matters and he may never recommend it.
Eisenhower's comments were made at a news conference at which he was asked for his reaction to anti-American demonstrations in Panama during which mob members hauled down the American Embassy flag yesterday and destroyed it.
The President said he thought this demonstration was carried on by excitable groups and extremists who had resorted to mob action.
He said this action was puzzling in the light of all the efforts the United States has made to treat Panama fairly.
Eisenhower said he has the confident hope that not only Panama but every other civilized government will make certain that law and order are preserved.
