Music filled the Baranof Hotel Gold Room this noon, when 30 Juneau High School girls gave a miniature concert for the weekly Kiwanis Club meeting.
Miss Beatrice McNeely, choral director, conducted the Girls' Glee Club in three songs, one of them--- 'The Green Cathedral'---being substituted for Irene McKinley's vocal solo. (Irene had a touch of laryngitis today, after yesterday's school picnic in the rain. Due to the absence of Joan Sabin, the duet she and Ann Henning were to play had to be omitted.)
Jana McConnel, accompanied by her sister, Evangeline, sang 'When the Sun is Going Down,' composed by their mother, Mrs. Paul I. McConnel.
Ann Henning accompanied the Glee Club, which opened the program with 'When Day is Done,' and closed it with 'Prayer Perfect.'
Gene Vuille, program chairman, showed both girls and members the bronze medallions and lapel pins to be awarded annually by the club for excellence in band choral performance.
The first Juneau winners of the National Arion Foundation Award will be announced at next week's Kiwanis meeting, when the presentation will be made. Meantime, the medal-and-pin sets are on display in the window of Eckley K. Guerin's photography shop.
Larry Parker, just back from Columbia, Ga., where he took a three-month course at the Public Health Training Station, spoke briefly on his first trip to the South, and expressed his pleasure at being back in the North. Parker is sanitary engineer for the Engineering Division of the Territorial Department of Health.
President James McClellan called attention to the fact that, as a result of the Kiwanis Club's circularizing of candidates last fall, the 19th Legislature passed the law requiring Territorial employees to take the anti-Communist oath.
Eckley K. Guerin asked members to suggest ideas for raising $500, for sending a Juneau Girl Scout to camp in Michigan.
Floyd Morley of the Anchorage Kiwanis Club was a guest at today's meeting.
