Installation of radar equipment and new cargo gear on the steamer Dorian Prince, (above), recently purchased by the Alaska Steamship Company, will precede her entrance into the Alaska trade. Admiral F. A. Zeusler, executive assistant to the president of the line, announces.
"All the rest of our vessels are equipped with radar," he stated, "and since it has proved of inestimable value in reducing delays and maintaining schedules—developing better service for Alaska—the new vessel is also being so outfitted before we place her on the run.
"The Alaska Steamship Company," he pointed out, "has followed the practice of equipping its vessels with the finest navigating instruments and the Dorian Prince will be no exception."
In order to facilitate freight handling on this vessel, a new set of cargo gears and booms are being installed on the after end of No. 2 hatch. That hatch—the one with the largest capacity on this Liberty-type ship, of 60 percent greater capacity than the next largest—may then be loaded and unloaded in approximately the same time as the other hatches.
"This will speed up the overall loading and discharging operation of the vessel," Zeusler stated, "cutting the time required for delivering Alaska shipments."
The Alaska Line steamer Chief Washakie was similarly equipped with new cargo gear a few months ago.
