Bold attempt at Assassination. —From the passengers in the Good Intent line from the east, which arrived here on Sunday last, we learn the following particulars of an outrage which is to be added to the long and black list of evils produced by intemperance:
On Sunday last, the 19th inst. while the stage was crossing the Alleghany mountains, a way passenger, named Jas. Denison, applied for seats for himself and daughter. The latter entered the stage, while the former took a seat on the outside, which he retained until reaching Mount Pleasant. Here, it having become dark, he got inside of the stage, and soon began to use abusive & threatening language to some of the passengers for which they assure us there was not the slightest foundation. Becoming more & more excited from the effects of drink, when the stage had proceeded 3 and a half miles from Mt Pleasant, he stabbed, with a knife, the gentlemen who sat in front of him, Mr Benner, merchant, of Cambridge Ohio. The wound took effect in the arm, and Mr Benner, in company with a surgeon, proceeded to the nearest house, Mr John Cowen's where, while the wound was being dressed, said Denison entered and again assailed Mr Benner. He was, however, repelled by those present, and driven from the house. It is proper to say that the same driver refused to carry the ruffian any further,—Wheeling Gazette.
