Full Text

A dashing middle aged Englishman, named Wilkinson, contrived a short time since to swindle no less than thirteen different merchants in Liverpool out of thirteen valuable packages of goods. Having got possession of the property under false pretences, without paying for it, he embarked on board the ship Macon, for New York. The merchants having discovered his flight, and the name of the ship in which he sailed, made affidavit in Liverpool to the fact of the swindling, and thirteen processes were issued there for his arrest. These were forwarded by the packet ship Virginia, Capt. Harris, to Mr. Charles H. Russel, merchant, of Pearl street, who, with his lawyer, Mr. David Hall, laid the case before Mr. Justice Lownds. The necessary steps being taken for his arrest, and the requisite processes being deposited in the hands of Brink, the officer, he kept a sharp look out for the arrival of the Macon, which vessel fortunately did not reach here until several days after the Virginia, although she sailed before her. As soon as she was telegraphed, Brink took a boat, went down and boarded her at the Narrows, and arrested Wilkinson, who had the thirteen packages with him; these were sent to the public stores, and Wilkinson is in Bridewell.
