Moyn's Anthology....It affords us much pleasure to observe that another volume of that national and splendid work, "Albyn's Anthology," has just been published by Messrs. Oliver & Boyd, and we are highly gratified to find that this volume is even more interesting, both to the antiquarian and the musical amateur, than its predecessor. The work indeed appears to improve in its progress, and we heartily wish it success. Among the contributors to the present volume are some of the first poets of the age. The following humorous ballad, from the pen of Walter Scott, Esq. entitled "Donald Caird," is eminently characteristic of the bold leader of a Gipsy tribe. It is quite in the spirit of the original air to which it is adapted.
Donald Caird
Donald Caird's come again!
Donald Caird's come again!
Tell the news in burgh and glen,
Donald Caird's come again!
Donald Caird can lilt and sing,
Blithely dance the Highland fling,
Drink till the gudeman be blind,
Fleech till the gude wife be kind;
Hoop a leglin, clout a pan,
Crack a pow wi' ony man:
Tell the news in burgh or glen,
Donald Caird's come again!
Donald Caird can wire a maukin,
Kens the wiles o' dun deer staukin,
Leisters kipper, makes a shift
To shoot a muirfowl in the drift;
Water bailiffs, rangers, keepers,
He can wauk when ye are sleepers;
Not to bound o'er muir and hill,
But he canna win your will;
Dare ye mall wi' Donald Caird!
Donald Caird, &c.
Donald Caird can drink a gill
Fast as hostler wife can fill;
Ilka ane that sells gude liquor
Kens how Donald bends a bicker:
When he's fou he's stout and saucy,
Keeps the cantle o' the causey;
Highland chief and lowland laird
Mae gie room for Donald Caird!
Donald Caird, &c. &c.
Steek the amrie, lock the kist,
Else some gear may weel be mist;
Donald Caird finds orra things
Where Allan Gregor fand the tings;
Dunts o' kebbuck, taits o' woo',
Whiles a hen, and whiles a sow,
Wens or duds frae hedge or yard-
Wae's my heart! if Donald Caird!
Donald Caird, &c. &c.
On Donald Caird the doom was stern:
Craig to tether, legs to airn;
But Donald Caird wi' muckle study,
Cought the gift to cheat the woodie;
Rings o' airn, and bots o' siccle,
Fell like ice frae hand and heel!;
Watch the sheep in fauld and glen,
Donald Caird's loose again!
Donald Caird, &c. &c.
In this work too the original melodies of several of our old ballads, such as "Dick o' the Cow," "Jock o' the Side," "Sir Patrick Spens," &c. &c. appear for the first time united to their respective words. The author has also communicated some very curious and interesting notes relative to the various songs in the work. The musical reader will no doubt enjoy a rich treat in the perusal of this new volume of Albyn's Anthology.
