DESERTER AND MURDERER.

Fort Meade Deserter Must Answer for His Crimes.

Several months ago there was considerable talk at Ft. Meade and Sturgis over the desertion of Private Walter Gordon, troop K, 13th Cavalry, and the subsequent developments have emphasized the suspicion advanced at the time that the man was a criminal, says the Sturgis Press.

The morning of the night he deserted, cards were received at the postoffice giving a description of one Walter Gordon, wanted at Winnipeg, Manitoba, for the foul murder of two men and offering a reward of $1000 for his apprehension.

Several of the members of his troop seemed to be struck with the description and name. They laughingly suggested to Gordon that he was wanted in Canada for killing a couple of men. It seems he went to the post office to satisfy himself and from there left the post and nothing had been heard of him until the arrival in Sturgis of Marshal Elliott, of Winnipeg.

Mr. Elliott was here after witnesses and it is now learned that Sergeant Russel, of M troop, Private Seares and the first cook of the troop, are the ones who have followed up Gordon after communicating with Mr. Elliott by some clever detective work, aided by a lady in the east, with whom Gordon had been corresponding, found that he was about to enlist in Halifax, N. S., and immediately wired the marshal of the fact.

Mr. Elliott hastened to Halifax and arrested Gordon, who had enlisted under the name of Gray, and brought him back to Winnipeg.

Sergeant Russell, Private Seares and the chief cook of K troop, are to be subpoenaed as witnesses and we understand will receive the greater portion, if not all, of $1000 offered for Gordon's apprehension, as Mr. Elliott concedes that the three men mentioned are deserving of the entire credit due to locating and arresting the murderer.

Mr. Elliott was at the Post last Friday interviewing and arranging for the appearance of Serg. Russel, Private Seares and the cook, at the trial of Gordon. He says the evidence against Gordon is overwhelming.
