SCHOOL ENTERS MANY CONTESTS MANY PUPILS WIN HONORS IN VARIOUS EVENTS DURING YEAR

Hernando High school has taken part in a number of contests again this year. She has always had a record of entering every contest possible but this year the average has been surpassed.

As before the declamation, oratory, one act plays and debating were among the contests. Nevitt Cook won second place in the district meet. Ruby Morton won third place in the district and the boys in the one act play won second place in the district. Both the affirmative and negative teams in debating lost, however they did well and deserve credit.

Mildred Hilliard tied for the healthiest girl in the state of Florida, and went to Chicago in December to enter the National meet. She was graded one-tenth per cent. lower than Florence Smock, of Florida, who won the National title. Hernando has her hopes high for the title next year.

Hazel Keathley won second place in the district English IV contest. Hope Saxon won first in district Algebra meet and Sarah Reynolds won second in the Sophomore English. These three enter the state contest at Gainesville.

Miss Elizabeth Lowe coached Carolyn Endsley and Geraldine Starkey for an examination on the League of Nations which was taken by students all over the United States.

The entire Senior class wrote themes on the life of Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson for the U. D. C. contest. The winner of this contest will be read tonight.

Besides all of these contests the students have done many other outside things and covered more territory and have had more school work than ever before. The average made by the school is now around 85 percent, while other schools do well to have 75 percent.
