"June 14, being in lat. 18 north, long. 50 west, was boarded by a pirate brig of about 300 to 350 tons, Spanish built, 16 eighteen carronades, 80 whites, and 500 slaves on board--the officers were all Spanish.--The captain and first officer, with 14 men, boarded the schooner, and sent myself and mate on board the brig. They remained on board the schooner about seven hours, plundering and searching every part of the vessel, which they did thoroughly. At about 5 in the afternoon we were put on board the schooner, found the hatches open fore and aft, boats hove over and cut adrift, the sails down, much injured, and the rigging much cut and destroyed: a part of the cargo on deck. They took from us 25 bbls. of flour, 12 do. of bread, (being all we had on board except 30 or 40 lb.) all the cabin stores, medicine chest, rigging, canvass, tools, and spars, all our cabin furniture of every description, all our clothing, books, charts, instruments, and papers, (except my register, clearance, manifest, and outward invoice--these I saved by concealing them about my person.)"
