Dear Mr. Smith:
Two questions come to mind after reading your statement in the Sunday newspapers. This statement says that 'If Marvin, Herman, Eugene Cook and Roy Harris would keep their mouths shut, we could resolve this thing (the segregation question)'. One is who is the 'We' you refer to? Could it be you, Ralph McGill, Bill Hartsfield, Ellis Arnall and others of like mind?
The second is how can you resolve a question when the NAACP and others are asking for 100% integration and will accept nothing less, while on the other hand a majority of the white people of this state want segregation 100%.
If 'we' can resolve this to the satisfaction of all concerned then we are resolving son of a guns.
I cannot understand why 'we' didn't bring up their solution at the last legislature. Being as that opportunity was missed then I am sure that you owe it to the people to bring this panacea before the next session of the legislature. You will certainly be derelict in your duties if you don't get this thing resolved to everyones satisfaction because you have stated that we could do it.
By resolving the question. I don't think that any statements about lets be calm about this will resolve it. To my mind to resolve a thing is to settle it permanently and either have segregation or integration. I don't know which way you have in mind and that is one of the questions I would like for you to answer for me.
Looking forward to getting this thing resolved, I am,
Cordially yours,
J. E. Brooks, Jr.

Main Argument
challenges smith's claim that segregation could be resolved if certain politicians stayed silent, questioning the identity of 'we,' the practicality given opposing demands for full integration versus segregation, and demanding clarity on the proposed permanent solution and legislative action.
