PANTHERS DISPLAY AMAZING POWER ON GROUND, OVERHEAD
By JOEL W. SMITH
The Clark College Panthers displayed amazing power on the ground and overhead in romping to a smashing 34-6 triumph over the Morehouse College Tigers, Saturday afternoon, at Herndon Memorial Stadium.
The banner crowd that took advantage of some sparkling autumn weather to come out and see these traditional neighborhood rivals battle right down to the final whistle was also treated to a colorful halftime show by the Morehouse Band and Marching Drill Team, Wendell Whalum, bandmaster; and the Clark Band and fancy-stepping majorettes, with Wayman Carver, bandmaster.
THE YARDSTICK
Clark Morehouse
18 First Downs 9
215 Yards Rushing 112
95 Yards Passing 75
125 Yards Penalized 50
The Cardinal and Black Panthers went 36 yards to pay-dirt early in the first period after Capt. Algia Barnett returned Jamario Bowen's punt to the Morehouse 36.
A 12-yard run by James Touchstone, and a 19-yard toss from William Richardson to Barnett, set the stage and Touchstone scored from the one-yard line. Richardson passed to Nudie Williams for the extra point.
PANTHERS MARCH 61 YARDS IN 2ND PERIOD
A bad pass from center gave Clark a quick safety early in the second period, then the Cardinal and Black Panthers marched 61 yards on a sustained drive. After firing an 18-yard pass to Jesse Holiday, Richardson hit Alfred Ellis with a touchdown pass. The try-for-point after touchdown was no good, and Clark was out front 15-0 at intermission.
The Panthers took the kick-off in the second half and promptly went 56 yards to pay-dirt. Grinding out yardage on the ground were Touchstone, James Glenn, and Barnett, who rambled 19 yards and then crashed over from the one-yard line. The attempted conversion was no good.
BARNETT STREAKS 60 YARDS FOR FINAL TD
Clark went 71 yards for another touchdown early in the fourth period, with Richardson pitching 23 yards to Ellis for the pay-off, and moments later Capt. Barnett eluded a flock of would-be tacklers and twisted 60 yards for the Panthers' final score of the afternoon. Richardson passed to Charles Miles for the extra point.
The Maroon Tigers cashed-in on a touchdown on a brilliant 60-yard drive. Andrew Phillips touched off the drive with a nine-yard run and Harold Turner tossed a 19-yard pass to Quiester Craig. Phillips ripped off 13 yards around right end and speared a 22-yard pass from Turner for the touchdown. The try-for-point after touchdown was no good.
The Panthers were on the march again and the time ran out after a long pass from Holiday to Ellis, which covered 45 yards.
