The resignation of Mr Smith, late Secretary of state of the U. S. we find by many papers we receive, is making considerable noise: whatever may have occasioned his resignation, or as some term it his dismission, it is a matter of high exultation, that the cause of freedom cannot depend on any one man, nor its benefits be engrossed by any particular class. The crisis is important; firmness in the President demands candor from the people, and public peace and national felicity we doubt not will be the result.
