CONGRESS.—The twenty-sixth Congress closed their session on the night of the third instant: The vote of thanks to Mr. Hunter, the speaker of the House and the like vote to R. M. Johnson, president of the Senate, were unanimously passed in the respective bodies, and the farewell addresses were peculiarly affecting. Henry Clay spoke of Mr. Johnson as "a gentleman of excellence and worth." who would take into retirement with him the best wishes of the country. Several appointments made by the President, to wit: Hon. Peter V. Daniel, of Virginia, a judge of U. S. Supreme Court, in place of Judge Barbour, deceased, and Mr. I. T. Mason, district judge of Virginia, in place of Judge Daniel, were confirmed by the Senate. The vote stood 22 to 5. No Whig senator voted. It may be said, in general, that all the annual appropriation bills were passed, so the Government may go on with its operations; and this comprises all the legislation of the session for common defence and general welfare.— N. Y. Bap. Reg.
