Full Text

The French, with as little Regard to Decency, bestowing on us the Names of Pirates and Barbarians; nay, in one of the Remonstrances to their King, they say, That our Hostilities with France began with Assassinations. It is impossible to guess what they intend by fixing an Imputation, not only scandalously unjust, but so opposite to that Generosity we hope will long be the Character of Britons. What makes so foul Language still more unbecoming in them, is this, that they themselves but a few Years ago set the Example of committing Hostilities without a Declaration of War; we mean when, in 1747, they invaded Holland, and while they took the Towns of the Republic, impudently pretended they had no Intention of making War, but that these Sieges were only undertaken for the Security of the Conquests they had made on the Queen of Hungary in Flanders.

Event Details

The French accuse the British of starting hostilities with assassinations in a remonstrance to their king, calling them pirates and barbarians. The British decry this as unjust and unbecoming, emphasizing their own generosity, and highlight French hypocrisy from their 1747 invasion of Holland, where they besieged towns while claiming no intent to make war, only to secure conquests from the Queen of Hungary in Flanders.
