SONG.
America's political Christmas.
Ere expire with this prayer upon his trembling lips, "Give us WASHINGTON: and let the grey headed
Begin with the infant in his cradle, let the first word
of good! long, long indulge this country with thy WASHINGTON."
WHILE others sing of Kings,
And such like titled things;
To praise in song,
HEROES, in battle slain,
STATESMEN, who still remain
Our glory to maintain,
To us belong.
GOD save great WASHINGTON,
Belona's noblest son,
Long to command:
My every enemy.
Aw'd by his virtues, flee,
And let grim tyranny
Bound by his hand.
God save America!
Free from despotic sway,
Till time shall cease;
Long hath the din of arms
Been hush'd: to war's alarms
Follow'd, in all its charms,
Heaven born PEACE.
Fly Dame, MONTGOMERY!
Still is, and e'er shall be,
Prais'd in each breath:
Though on the fatal plain,
Thou wast untimely slain,
Virtues like thine, shall gain
Rescue from death.
And fame, great patriot JAY,
Would we a tribute pay,
To worth like thine;
While all the good and wise,
Thy late proceedings prize,
In vain to blind our eyes,
Shall knaves combine.
WILT thou great HAMILTON!
Genius and virtue's son,
Accept these lays;
Although thy treasury
Of fame, exhausted be,
We give, from penury
One mite of praise.
But time itself would fail.
Should we attempt to hail
The FEDERAL BAND:
Long may Columbia know,
What joys from freedom flow,
And ne'er may any foe
Distress our land.
