Fairmont, W. Va., June 2. - In shielding the one-year-old baby she held when her maddened husband began shooting at her in their home near Farmington, Mrs. Pavan Bikinas received three revolver bullets in the arm raised to protect the infant. A fourth bullet entered her brain, inflicting a wound from which she died four hours later.
As soon as his wife fell Bikinas held the weapon to his own head and fired a fifth bullet, and is dying at Cook Hospital here. The baby is unhurt.
The scene of the tragedy is a mining settlement ten miles from Fairmont. The couple, Lithuanians, are said to have quarreled frequently over alleged attentions paid to the wife by another man.
The shooting was witnessed by Andy Anevick, who called at the house. Mrs. Bikinas had just risen from the dinner table with the baby in her arms, when the husband began firing. Bikinas is said to have told the doctors he was jealous of his wife. He is 26 years old and the dead woman was 24. The baby, whose life was saved by the mother's self-sacrifice, and an elder child are left.
