Full Text

They are trying in New York to get up another McLeod affair. An individual has been arrested near Lockport, of whose participation in the attack upon the Caroline no doubt is expressed. The principal evidence against the prisoner is like that of McLeod, nothing more than his own confession. Probably some braggadocio has been boasting of exploits that he has had nothing to do with, or perhaps a thirst for notoriety has induced a vain-glorious subject of Her Britannic Majesty to court a judicial investigation. The whole affair will no doubt turn out to be a mistake. It is not probable that any person actually guilty of the crime, would trust himself on the American side of the line, in the immediate vicinity of the scene of the atrocity. The rigorous proceedings against McLeod, and the difficulty with which he escaped, although innocent, is a warning to all that are really guilty, that cannot so soon have been forgotten.

Such a rash adventure into danger is not so likely as the supposition that the ambition of being made a lion of, has prompted some aspirant after distinction to confess an outrage of which, in the end, he will be found to be innocent.

However this may be, it is sufficiently obvious that the incident cannot, at this late hour of the day, create much of an excitement. The public were perfectly satiated upon the occasion of the previous trial, and it will be difficult now to revive the appetite. There is also an evident unwillingness on the part of both governments to rip up the old question again, and the moderate of all parties participate in the feeling.

It is now pretty well understood that there was wrong, as well on one side as on the other, and now that the fuss is blown over, as it were, the less that is said about it, the better. The truth is that we have unsettled questions enough with Great Britain, without seeking to make the controversy more complicated and hard of adjustment. It is much feared, even now, that our difficulties are so much in an entanglement, and tied as it were into a gordian knot, that it will take the sword to cut it. Any movement is not therefore to be encouraged, tending to embroil our relations with England, nor is the one alluded to likely to receive countenance either from the government or the public.

We trust, however, that the whole affair will turn out to be a false alarm got up for a little fun, and to play a hoax upon the good people of New York.-N. O. Bulletin.

Event Details

An individual arrested near Lockport for alleged participation in the Caroline attack, based on his confession similar to McLeod's case. The article speculates it stems from braggadocio or desire for notoriety by a British subject, and doubts any guilty party would risk crossing into the US. Both governments and public show reluctance to reopen the issue amid existing tensions.
