Kenneth Hudgins, of Farmville, and Martha Weisiger, of Amelia, were two of the winners of District 3, Group 2, Forensic meet, held Friday afternoon at Longwood College.
Students from Farmville and Amelia High School were in competition with groups from Buckingham, Lawrenceville, and Greensville County in Poetry and Prose Reading, Debating, Spelling, and Public Speaking.
Kenneth and Martha were chosen first in Boy's Prose Reading division and Girl's Poetry Reading, respectively.
The Public Speaking contest was won by Martha Ann Kiser, of Greensville County, with Jean Whitlow, of Lawrenceville, placing second, and Whitehead Elmore, also of Lawrenceville, ranking third. Winning speeches were entitled "Clean Living," "The Constitution and Bill of Rights," and "Hazards of Public Speaking."
Greensville County School in Emporia was the only group to enter a debate team. Consisting of Mesetta Sykes, William C. Blalock, Joe Jones, and Georgia Allen, it was given a top rating.
The Spelling contest was won by Sylvia Harrison, of Greensville, who has walked off with top honors for three years straight now. Bonnie Mann, of Farmville, placed second.
Mary Watkins, of Lawrenceville, placed first in the Girl's Prose Reading division.
The local meeting which sponsored by the Virginia High School League, was the preliminary to final contests in Charlottesville. Winner from this district will compete against other district winners for State titles.
Arrangements for the meeting here were made by Miss Virginia Sutherland, Longwood College senior, and Dr. C. L. S. Earley, associate professor of English.
Judges were Mrs. C. H. Davis, Jr., Mrs. Marvin Schlegel, Richard Meeker, Miss Lucile Jennings, Dr. Charles Patteson and Dr. Francis B. Simkins.
Martha Weisiger, of Amelia High School, and Kenneth Hudgins, of Farmville High School, were the two local winners in the Prose and Poetry Reading section of District 3, Group 2 Forensic Meet, held at Longwood College last week. They will both compete in the Charlottesville finals.
