Telegrams Last Night Announced That Twenty-three Feet Was Looked for at Pittsburg.
The rains of Friday and Saturday were not expected to make over sixteen or eighteen feet of water in the river at this point, not more than twelve feet being looked for at Pittsburg, but the big storms throughout Pennsylvania yesterday have changed the conditions, and last night the news from Pittsburgh was that twenty-three feet of water was looked for there, while at Warren, Bradford, and other Allegheny Valley points, the rain yesterday was very heavy and all the streams were booming.
Of course the floods about Williamsport will have no effect, the water running off east through the Susquehanna, but the storms about Bradford, and elsewhere on the New York State line, will swell the headwaters of the Allegheny, and will all pass this city.
Twenty-three feet of water at Pittsburgh will make thirty-three feet here, judged by the result in 1891. January 2, '91, there were twenty-three feet six inches of water at Pittsburg, and the next day at 2 a. m. there was thirty-three feet nine inches at Wheeling.
First alarms from Pittsburg, in recent years, have been exaggerated, and perhaps there is more of a guess at the freshet up there, than anything else.
