WASHINGTON. (U.P.)—Delegates from all over the country got down to serious work today in an effort to figure out a practical financing program by which every person in the United States who wants to can own his own home.
The delegates—a group of financial and building experts—set to work under the inspiration of an unusually eloquent and at times distinctly emotional address delivered by President Hoover at the opening of the conference.
The President told the gathering that he wanted them to do something practical to permit every American who so desires to build and own a home.
"Next to food and clothing," he said, "the housing of a nation is the most vital social and economic problem. We have fairly creditably solved every other segment of our credit structure more effectively than we have solved this one."
The President spent two months thinking over his speech and preparing for its delivery. Home ownership, he has reiterated time and again, is one of the things closest to his heart. The conference he addressed is known as "The President's Conference on Home Building and Home Ownership." It was his own idea and he pleaded that something practical come out of it.
The President referred to his home financing plan, made public recently, to establish 12 banks in various sections of the country to ease credit, enable home owners to meet their obligations, and others to take on such obligations.
The conference is composed of 30 separate committees on various special phases of the home owning problem.
