ROME, July 6.

The Capital of the Pope's Territories, and of Italy, the Walls about 12 Miles in Circumference, the Inhabitants computed to amount to 120,000 Souls; five Bridges over the River, 20 Gates, and 300 antique towers still remaining; the city magnificently built, the Streets spacious, and adorn'd with 300 fine Churches, and a vast number of Palaces, Convents, Colleges, &c. great plenty of all manner of Provisions, and the greatest Variety of Wines, and in the midst of all this Variety, the People are extremely sober, never sitting down purely to drink, and very seldom drinking Wine without Water. Modern Rome stands 14. or 12 Feet higher than the old City, being built on the Ruins of the former, and much more upon a Level than the old City was.

The Church has got a visible Head; Cardinal Charles Rezzonico, a Venetian Bishop of Padua, being elected on the 5th.--Every body knows the differences which perpetually subsist, not between the Holy See, but between the Ecclesiastical State, and the Seigneury of Venice, On account of the port of Ancona, the boundaries, the inundations: And as to Spirituals, without going back to Julius II. or Paul V that virtuous Pontiff Benedict XIV. tho't he had just Reasons to complain of the Venetians; and at the last promotion of Cardinals refused to give a Hat to their Nominee. Behold, nevertheless, the Holy Spirit, for, all things considered, the finger of God manifestly appears in it, hath caused Cardinal Rezzonico to be elected Head of the Church, and Sovereign of a great State, the neighbour and rival of the Venetians. On the 25th inst. upon the first scrutiny. there were unexpectedly found 37 voices for Cardinal Rezzonico. The election was canonical." He was asked what name he would assume. He answered Clement XIII. The father of our new Pope procured a Hat for him from Clement XII. through Cardinal Corsini, that Pope's nephew; and the one took care to make it known from time to time, what they had in view. Nevertheless, the creature Pope, one with whom he was often at variance nephew of Clement XII. has made his Uncle's variance. What strange contradictions; what unlooked for things in the best connected systems! Our new Pope was born on the 7th of March 1693. He was formerly Auditor of the Rota. He was made Cardinal by Clement XII. on the 20th October 1737) at the nomination of the Republick of Venice. He had the title of St. Maria d' Ara-Coeli (the principal convent of the Cordeliers) and was protector of the Illyrian Nation the Pandours. He is ill favoured and hunch backed; but of a strong vigorous constitution; a fresh complexion, walks well and firm; the honestest man in the world; a most exemplary ecclesiastic, of the purest morals; devout, steady: learned, diligent; in short worthy to succeed the great Benedict XIV. tho' no body certainly ever tho't he would be called to succeed him.
