Hollywood Notables Take In Ceremonies As Cars Move Off
HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 7 --(AP)-
In a spectacular gesture of American good-will to less fortunate lands beyond the sea, the Friendship Train leaves here amid traditional Hollywood ceremony tonight on a cross-country journey to collect food for starving Europe.
The train, expected to comprise eight food-laden boxcars and 15 flat cars bearing gay floats, will chug down Hollywood Boulevard. After being speeded on its way in a program which scores of film notables will participate.
It heads for the union terminal where the float cars will be uncoupled, and the actual start made at 11 p.m. (PST). Film Producer Harry M. Warner, chairman of the Friendship Train committee, said early response indicates the plan may raise 200 or more carloads of food for shipment abroad.
Among those participating in the send-off will be Gov. Earl Warren of California; Gov. Ingram Stainback of Hawaii, Mayor George Welsh, Grand Rapids, Mich., president of the American Mayors' Conference, and Charles Luckman, chairman of

the President's Citizens Food committee. Governor Stainback arrived in California yesterday, and announced that Hawaii residents would contribute two carloads of sugar.
The train is a vital part of the nation's emergency food program which Luckman said yesterday must succeed or fail by Jan. 1. It will tour California, then head East, arriving in New York Nov. 18. From time to time, as it grows longer, cars will be hooked to other trains and taken to New York.
