IS there such a thing as retributive justice in material things? Last week the great chemical works of the Badische Company at Oppau in Germany, the largest dye and high explosive manufactory in the world, was wiped out of existence by a terrible explosion which utterly destroyed the enormous establishment and shattered buildings for many miles. More than 1,000 persons were killed and 4,000 others were injured by the explosion, most of them employees of the concern.

The Badische works was an evil place. It was here that the first poison gas used in the World War was manufactured, and the great conflict was prolonged by the supplies of war chlorine, phosgene and lachrymatory and other poisonous gases and high explosives produced at this plant. It seems a just retribution that it should be wiped out of existence.
