Full Text

The New York State Convention for framing a constitution, is steadily progressing with its important business, and will soon, we doubt not, report to the people an instrument of government worthy of their confidence and adoption. It may be well to note, in speaking of it, that this convention, in proceeding with its work, by the direction of the people, is acting in positive defiance of the provisions of the existing constitution. In other words, the people, without any "constitutional" authority, are setting aside one form of government and adopting another. This—precisely this, and nothing more—constituted "treason" in Rhode Island in 1842. It was Dorrism here—and if we mistake not, has been several times denounced by the federal journals, as Dorrism there. If the New York Convention should present a constitution, and it should be adopted, and a Governor elected under it, that Governor would stand precisely where Governor Dorr stood, and might as rightfully be opposed, hunted, persecuted, and imprisoned, as was that servant of the people, in this little Little Algiers.
