Massachusetts.—With much satisfaction we learn that it is in the contemplation of the legislature of Massachusetts, now in session, to break up their Congressional districts and elect the representatives by a general ticket. We well remember when those districts were laid out and what a cutting and carving, and running of strait lines and crooked ones there was for the purpose of defeating the election of certain federal gentlemen in congress; which was not perceived till it was too late, then indolence and an unwillingness to go thro' the trouble of districting the whole anew, prevented any thing being done from that time to this. One consequence was immediately seen in the election of Gen. Varnum in place of Mr. Dexter, and the general consequence has been that Massachusetts as a state, has hardly had a representation from that moment. Really it is high time that the voice of so great so powerful, and so influential a state, should be heard with effect within the walls of our national council.
There is another step too which we are prepared to look for from this state, the metropolis of which has so justly acquired the appellation of The head quarters of sound principles—the measure to which we have alluded it becomes not us to mention; but if any members of a copartnery ship should admit a stranger into the firm without the consent of the whole, would it not be competent to any one member to protest against this as an invasion of his rights?
