Full Text

Heywood Broun, president of the Newspaper Guild and leader in that move to organize and unionize newspaper folk, now advocates the European idea of a government-owned newspaper. We would like to take this opportunity to point out that there are already dozens of these. Included in the list are: Congressional Record, Agricultural Situation, School Life, Public Roads, Official Gazette, Commerce Reports, Public Health Reports, Crops and Markets, Consumers Bulletin, American Foreign Service Journal, etc., etc. These go out postage free and say whatever government officials see fit. Of course, we, the taxpayers, pay for these journals whether we wish to or not, and whether we get copies or never see an issue.
