The Judiciary and Politics.
From the Savannah News.
The movement progresses toward taking the judiciary in Georgia out of politics. It has gone past the period of necessary argument—everybody, even those who for cause oppose the plans suggested for removing the judges from the hold of political influences, admit that the system of popular election of judges is all wrong. The judges may be absolutely without blame—even though they are human and finite—and still, for their very own sakes, there is sufficient good reason to change the method of selecting them that they may not be embarrassed. A legislator has suggested a measure which has been long discussed—selection of the circuit and some other judges by the supreme court, appointment then by the governor of those so nominated, and the appointment then confirmed by the state senate. But of all the judges the supreme and appellate court judges are the ones to be removed and kept out of political realms. The law will have to be changed for some method of selection of these higher court judges—or the other part of the law will not be of full effect. Above all, the courts of final appeal should be beyond the reach of politics. Get the whole judicial system from top to bottom out of politics as nearly as may be.
