ANCHORAGE. (AP) Good Samaritans turn up in the darndest ways. Arthur Allen can vouch for that.
Fay Simmons, 30, a helicopter pilot, was on a trip to Tok Junction Wednesday when he spotted Allen lying face down on the highway.
He landed the helicopter alongside the man to find out what was wrong. He learned Allen was okay, just weak from going without food for two days.
Allen, a hospital orderly and truck driver, told Simmons he had flown to Alaska to look for work. He had about $25 when he arrived and that lasted one week. When the money ran out he started hitchhiking back to California.
Simmons loaded Allen in the helicopter and flew him to Tok Junction where he fed him and they spent the night. Then he brought him back to Anchorage and found Allen a place to stay while he again looks for a job.
Allen is single, and about 45. He told the pilot he heard there was so much work available in Alaska he thought he would be able to get a job immediately.
