Prospects for a Large and Important
Gathering of Stock Men at Hel-
ena July 28th, Next.
The indications are that the Conven-
tion of the stock growers of the Terri-
tory, called to meet at Helena on July
28th, will be largely attended and pro-
ductive of much good. There appears to
be a universal feeling that such a meet
ing should be held, if for no other pur
pose than for social exchange of ideas
but it is probable that a perfect and per-
manent organization will be the out-
come. All concede the importance and
actual need of concert of action and mu-
tual understanding among all engaged
in sheep, horse and cattle raising within
our Territorial limits. and that such
may be had. this Convention has been
called.
The cattle owners of Western Montana
already have an excellent Association.
with headquarters at Miles City, and a
membership of one hundred. Their de
legation to the July Convention will be
a strong one, both as to intelligence and
capital represented. They will come
with a conviction that the present condi-
tion of our laws governing the live stock
industry is in absolute need of additions
and modifications. The capital invested
in live stock requires at least the protee
tion given other interests of like magni
tude, and if such protecting arm cannot
be thrown around the millions of dollars
on our hills and in our valleys, then
capitalists may well hesitate about fur-
ther investments. Take from Montana
her two permanent interests-stock rais-
ing and mining-and the day that sees
them made secondary to any other single
or combined industry, will be a sad one
in the minds of any faction so narrow
minded as to antagonize them.-Montana
