Baltimore, Oct. 22.
General Scott visited the Mechanics' Fair, at this place last night. The spacious saloon, which is 300 feet long, was densely crowded. General Scott entered at the rear door, and when he made his appearance on the stage which had been erected, he was cheered most vehemently; the band in attendance then struck up "Hail to the Chief."
Joshua Van Sant, the President of the Institute, addressed the General in behalf of the Institution, and alluded to his life, which was so interwoven with almost every chapter of his country's history.
General Scott replied, expressing his thanks and gratification for the honors conferred upon him by his countrymen. He alluded to the boxes which had been placed in the hall, to receive subscriptions for the Washington Monument, and after passing a touching eulogium on the character and services of Washington, asked permission to drop into one of them his mite.
