October 28. We have the following account of a dispute between a Venetian line of battle ship and two English frigates, in a letter from Tunis, dated September 14:--

The Venetian squadron arrived in this bay the 1st of September, and remained there five days, without being able to adjust with the regency the disputes which caused the expedition; the Dey still continuing firm resolved not to make peace but on the conditions first offered by him. This squadron weighed anchor the 5th, and was thought to be destined against Bizerte, but after having cruised six or seven days off Porto Farina, it veered off towards Sardinia, as was supposed, to water. The Admiral had left at the mouth of our bay a ship of the line and a chebec, with orders to visit all vessels that should arrive, but not prevent them from entering the harbour: The English frigates, the Thetis and the Sphinx, having presented themselves the 8th, the Venetian man of war fired five shots at them, on which they immediately dropped anchor, and the English Commander sent a letter to the Venetian Commodore, to know if England was at war with the Republic of Venice; if not the meaning of the insult. The latter, on pretence of not understanding English, sent the letter to the Chevalier Emo by the chebec, and that vessel not returning the next day, the Venetian man of war got under sail, when the English ships imagining that she was running away, made sail after her: They dropped anchor on both sides, and were preparing for action when the chebec arrived. Soon after the Commander of the Venetian squadron sent to apologize to the English Captain, but was informed that it was too late. The next day the two English frigates entered the bay. What is singular in this affair, is, that off Porto Farina, the Chevalier Emo had assured the English Captain that the port of Tunis was not blocked up: We are curious to know how this matter will terminate.
