TRAIN HITS AUTO: MAN JUMPS
B. F. Godwin of Millington, Md., Had Presence of Mind to Save Himself
His presence of mind to jump when he saw that he could not avoid being hit by an oncoming train saved B. F. Godwin, of Millington, Md., last week when his automobile was completely demolished after he made a successful leap from it. The accident occurred over at Massey, Md., on the Pennsylvania Railroad's Chestertown and Centreville Branch. Due to the darkness, Godwin found himself near the railroad crossing with the passenger train speeding southward, before he had time to apply the brakes. Thinking he could clear the crossing in time to avoid the crash, he took a chance. He saw in a second, after he was on the track that the train was bound to strike his machine, so he made a desperate leap, landing on the side of the track. When he recovered from his leap and ran into the field to avoid being struck by flying debris, he found that his car had been completely demolished. The engineer had brought the train to a stop, but too late to avoid the crash.
