his Catholic Majesty, to the Citizen Minister
of Foreign Affairs.
Paris, 3d Jan. 1797.
Citizen Minister,
THE friendly and distinguished reception
which the Spanish fleet experienced
at Toulon, as well as the public marks of
affection and esteem which spontaneously
flowed from its inhabitants on the occasion,
have excited the most lively sentiments in
his majesty; who on the first reception of
the intelligence has charged me to communicate
to the French Government, his sincere expressions
of gratitude; and I hasten, Citizen Minister, to obey
this order with so much the more pleasure as the
generous sentiments of his Majesty, which I pray
you to communicate to the Executive Directory,
will be a new and sure pledge of the stability of the
union which now happily subsists between
the two nations.
Permit me, Citizen Minister to take
hold of this opportunity to renew to you
my assurances of the highest consideration,
The Marquis del Campo.
