The road ahead of the San Diego Padres appears a bit too rough for them to make a first division berth in the 1940 Coast league baseball race.
They need another standout pitcher or two to help southpaw Welly Herbert, a 20-game winner, and a driving outfielder to supplant Dom DiLorenzo, the league's leading hitter. DiLorenzo went to the Chicago Cubs.
The Padres' main acquisition was Steve Mesner, astute shortstop, who hit .309 with Milwaukee last year. Mesner will play short, alongside Mike Heath at third, who hit .305 for the Padres last year.
