The Louisville Journal of the 5th inst., publishes a letter from Smithland, Ky., dated on the 30th ult., which says:

"We have in the last half hour, had an awful tragedy enacted in the Ohio river, opposite our town. The steamboat Princeton landed here this evening, and was attached for a small debt; two sheriffs were on board of her, when she backed off from the wharf with the intention of escaping, the sheriff cut her wheel rope, which made her unmanageable. There were sundry blows between the captain and the sheriff, during which time some two or three skiff loads of citizens were endeavoring to board her. Only one or two persons succeeded, one of whom was our ferryman, Mr. J. L. Brewster, who was shot by the captain (Keys) soon after getting on board, and is mortally wounded, perhaps dead by this time. They have mended her wheel-rope, and have just passed up, and the Gondola is just shoving out after her. It is doubtful whether she can catch her or not."
