SAVANNAH, June 17.

So prevalent has the practice of duelling become lately, that Major Small and Capt. Qua, two men of colour, some few days past agreed to meet at a time and place appointed, each attended by a friend with a pair of pistols, to decide a dispute which happened betwixt them. Captain Qua, with a degree of courage for which he has ever been distinguished, punctually attended; but the Major from that natural desire of life which most men are fond of, neglected to make his appearance, otherwise it is more than probable the dispute had been ended by the extinction of one of the parties. The Captain, enraged at the cowardly behaviour of his antagonist, determines on confining the Major a prisoner in his own house, under the penalty of a severe flogging, and appears constantly armed with a cowskin for the purpose.

Copy of the Challenge.

Captain Qua thinks himself injured by Major Small, Esq. and requires satisfaction for insult.--Major Small must either beg pardon, or fight to-morrow morning on pistol. My fellow servant Dick fix a place, and will let me know where. You must either do one or the other of the two things--Mind me, slave, so. Afternoon, near dark.

Major Small, Esq. Gentlemen's Barber, Savannah.

The Answer.

Major Small informs Captain Qua that he has received his challenge, and will accordingly meet him agreeable to appointment, in order to put out of the world a rascal and a thief that does not deserve to live in it--By gar.

9th June, 1790.

Captain Qua.

The reader will observe that Qua's language is simple and unadorned, Major Small's that of a person educated in France, and who has seen the world. Both the gentlemen got their titles from the British during the late war.
