Organization of the Legislature.—We are happy to announce the intelligence that both branches of our State Legislature were yesterday organized by the choice of Whig officers. After all the boastings and vaporings of the Tory papers in this city—notwithstanding their false calculations and their impudent contradiction of the estimate we have given from time to time, made up faithfully from the best information within our reach— and notwithstanding the incredulous and discreditable coolness with which the quasi Whig Journals received our statement—the result has proved us to have been as nearly correct as it was in the power of any one to be, under the circumstances. Of our neighbors of the Post and Bay State Democrat, we would beg leave to ask, where are now your boasted Tory majority? When will political views be such as to enable your statements and calculations ever to become consistent with truth and correctness? From such as pretend to agree with us in our views, but who, by their faint praise, have been so over anxious to damn our statements, we have only to hope they will not again be so ready to become the dupe of their designing opponents or be so unwilling to receive the truth. All the caucusings of the Tories, the corruption and fraud they have resorted to, all—all— has been in vain? Both branches of the Legislature of the old Bay State are still Whig. We trust and believe they will never be otherwise.
The House, after having been duly called to order, the usual oath having been administered to the members, and Mr. Cushing having been re-elected Clerk by a nearly unanimous vote, the committee appointed to receive and count the votes for Speaker, reported the following result;—
For R. C. Winthrop, 239
Nathan Wood, 221
Scattering, 12
Majority, 6
The scattering votes were all for Whigs, nine being for Charles Allen, Esq., of Worcester, so that the real strength of parties, as shown by the vote for Speaker, is as follows:
Whig, 251
Loco, 221
Whig majority, 30
It will be remembered, this is precisely the majority we have hitherto claimed.
