ARMISTICE DAY

The year was 1918. On that day the Armistice of the first World War was signed and the cease fire order flashed along the many battle fronts. Again, with Armistice Day, we remember the days of wars gone by, the many acts of heroism of our young men and women, and the tragedies that have befallen so many families.

This year, the meaning of Armistice Day comes to us with greater dramatic intensity than at any previous year in our history. For today, as Armistice Day approaches, ships are heading for our ports with the remains of many of our sons who signed their final Armistice on the bloody battle grounds that lay across the earth in patterns of agony and suffering.

The first Armistice was an occasion of celebration. Throngs crowded the plazas of our great cities and reveled till all hours of the night to celebrate the cessation of hostilities. In frenzied ecstasy they loosened the pent-up emotions of the days of war.

Deep underneath the thought of an armistice there lies the essence of the idea in the form of a resolution to cease from combat. It is with this thought in mind that we foster the new hope towards peace, the hope that the armistice may be the last one in the course of human events.

Let us not forget these men who gave in such full measure towards the final peace for which we are still striving. Let not our thoughts dwell on the cessation of war, but rather on the approach to peace. The millions who fell, through bullets, starvation, the concentration camps or pestilence cannot rest unless we hold faith by remembering them in our prayers on this day, the Day of Armistice.
