Severe Heat Brings Casualties from Drownings, Auto Mishaps and Prostrations
William Davis, who resided with his parents just outside the village of Clara City, went with two companions to Granite Falls Thurs. evening for a swim in an effort to cool off after the excessive heat of the day. While swimming in the Minnesota River, he stepped off into deep water and was drowned.
He is survived by his father and mother, one brother and two sisters.
St. Paul, Minn., June 19. - (P) - The oppressive heat which sent the mercury to the high point of the year in many Northwest areas Thursday was responsible directly or indirectly for thirteen lives in addition to many prostrations.
The dead are:
Alphonse Groski, 9, Winona boy drowned in Lake Winona while bathing near shore.
Miss Sandrina Kentie, Minneapolis nurse, drowned while bathing in Lake Minnetonka.
William Davis, 20, near Clara City, drowned in Minnesota river near Granite Falls when he stepped into deep water.
Charles Sanborn, 68, of St. Paul found dead in his automobile at rear of his home after he returned from a ride to "cool off."
Frederick Schubert, 17, Minneapolis, drowned at Hutchinson after he was stricken with a heart attack.
Elihu Rehling, 65, Pine Island, died after he collapsed.
A. T. Lotta, 64, overcome at his home at Worthington.
Erwin J. Rue, 33, Bismarck, N. D., died from a fractured skull after he collapsed on the street.
Morris Risman, 86, died at his home in Butternut township near Mankato, after he suffered a stroke believed induced by the heat.
Joe Newberger, 60, Willmar, stumbled and fell in a manhole and succumbed.
The mercury soared to 100 degrees above at New Ulm and Albert Lea in southern Minnesota on Thursday and shattered all records for the season. Montevideo had a maximum of 97.
Friday at 7 A. M. it was 83 at Winona, 82 at Austin, 80 at Fairmont and Mankato.
Northern Minnesota was enjoying lower temperatures, Bemidji being 69 at 7 A. M.
During a severe electrical storm early Friday a large hog barn on the Henry Lessin farm near Pipestone was destroyed by fire. More than a half inch rain fell, bringing relief to that section which had the hottest day of the year Thursday.
