GENERAL PARREN TO PROBE
SEGREGATION OF NURSES
WASHINGTON, June 18 (ANP)
-Surgeon Gen. Thomas A. Parran
of the United States Public Health
service assured representatives of
the Cleveland
branch
of the
NAACP that he would investigate
their charges of discrimination and
segregation of 10 Negro cadet nurses
at the Marine hospital, Cleveland,
and that with respect to separate
messing facilities, he would
immediately order an end to that.
Gen. Parran heard the complaint
laid before him by Dr. Nathan K.
Christopher and a committee representing
the branch. Capt. Jesse
O. Dedmon, secretary for veterans
affairs of the national association,
accompanied the group.
They pointed out to Gen. Parran
that their efforts to secure correction
of the problem complained of
through a Dr. Sweeney, commanding
officer of the Marine hospital,
had been unavailing. Parran told
them that the U. S. Public Health
service is operated on a democratic
basis, and that he would not tolerate
segregation and discrimination
in any of the facilities of the service
based on race, creed or color.
