OF THE
RHODE-ISLAND REPUBLICAN.
AT this momentous crisis, when foreign and domestick foes are threatening annihilation to our moral, civil, and political existence ; when the great pillars of natural and politick law are swept away by the torrent of modern usurpation, and MIGHT is made a substitute for RIGHT ; and, when foreign edicts under the specious pretexts of mutual retaliation are prostrating our neutral rights, and forcing us to the alternatives of war, or slavish submission-the friends of our Republican Government and Institutions, throughout the Union, are loudly called upon to support with their fortunes, influence, and even lives, if necessary, the principles for which their fathers bled, and which have been, thus far, transmitted unsullied to their posterity.
One great means towards the accomplishment of this all important object, is the general diffusion of correct political information. rendered indeed indispensably necessary, by the alarming and fatal height already attained by the opposition prints, which have so long advocated the cause of a foreign nation against our country, that they have actually quitted American ground. Their conductors, in a systematick abuse of the government of this country, appear to have lost sight of the original ground of opposition, and to be as it were, imperceptibly denationalized. It is against the arts and sophistry of this faction. which now stalks abroad at noon day, that the energy & patriotism of real Americans should be exerted; and in resisting which, the Rhode-Island Republican will firmly adhere to the strict maxims of political justice. It will never descend to low and virulent abuse, or personal invective ; but steady in its course, it will support with dignity. as far as its influence extends, the Independence and Liberty of our country Actuated by a zeal which knows no bounds but justice, and governed by principles which have no end but the publick welfare, its editors will rest their claims of continued support upon the fidelity with which they shall cherish these principles.
